Have you ever said “I believe in myself?”
Fear not because we’ve got you covered!
DAY 2 of the UPD-Cambridge Philosophy Lecture Series 2025 will be on “The Nature of the Self: A Lecture at the Intersection of Philosophy of Psychology, Philosophy of Cognitive Science, and Philosophy of Neuroscience” by Dr. Tom McClelland!
To get the gist of what the lecture is going to be about, you can take a look at his abstract:
Contemporary cognitive science has revealed a great deal about the nature of the self. In psychology, various experiments have shed light on how the brain constructs a multi-faceted model of the self. In psychiatry, various disorders can be understood as disruptions to the sense of self. And in neuroscience, ‘split brain’ patients reveal how the self can fragment after neurosurgery. But what does all this mean for fundamental questions about the nature of self? Does your self persist over time? Does the self even exist? Are some questions about the self beyond the reach of science?
