Webinars on An Introduction To The Human Person

(In partnership with DepEd San Jose City, Nueva Ecija) Sept. 1, 2021 to Nov. 30, 2021

Per the request of Dr. Johanna Gervacio, School Superintendent of San Jose City, Nueva Ecija, a group of volunteers from the Department of Philosophy conducted trainings on the topic “Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person,” which is a core course offered to senior high school students. DepEd San Jose posited that only 16 out of their 36 HUMSS (Humanities and Social Science) faculty members possess a major in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Most of them have specialties in other fields such as P.E., Music, Home Economics, and the like. The partnership between DepEd San Jose City and the department seeks to provide more robust and in-depth knowledge in teaching this course. All in all, 100 teachers benefited from these trainings.

Teaching Ethics Online: Using Community of Inquiry as Framework

(In partnership with Mindanao State University – General Santos or MSU-GenSan) September 1, 2020 to present

For years, MSU-GenSan has been a beneficiary of the teacher trainings of the UP Diliman Department of Philosophy. These teacher trainings focused on the use of Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework as an alternative pedagogy. In September 2020, Dr. Lumberto Mendoza of the department again partnered with MSU-GenSan to launch a project on the use of CoI in the online teaching of ethics. This project was conceptualized in response to the need to augment teaching capabilities among educators in the virtual set-up. Such a set-up was brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. This project birthed two nationwide webinars, two conference presentations, and a joint peer-reviewed publication.

The first webinar was entitled “Teaching Ethics in the Time of COVID: Using Community of Inquiry as Framework” held on 16 November 2020 through Zoom and Facebook Live. 227 registrants hailed from 109 different organizations across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The attendance was exceptional considering that it was scheduled right after Typhoons Ulysses and Rolly. Affiliated Network on Social Accountability in East Asia and the Pacific (ANSA-EAP) was also a partner institution together with MSU-GenSan.

The second webinar was entitled “Exploring the Use of Community of Inquiry in Peace Studies” held on 22 March 2021 also through Zoom and Facebook Live. 80 participants attended the event where the stakeholders of MSU-GenSan vocalized the demand for Peace Studies education in their institution. Ethical issues are also tackled in Peace Studies. Extending the use of CoI in the teaching of Peace Studies as well was discussed together with the development of modules on the topic.

To report the positive results of the webinars, Dr. Mendoza and the extension project members gave two presentations at the 4th Colleges and Universities Public Service Conference. This was held on 22 October 2022 through Zoom.

Most successful was the release of a joint journal publication entitled “Community of Inquiry (CoI) for Distance Learning in the Philippines: Appraising Lee’s CoI through Garrison’s CoI”. This was published in the Diliman Review Volume 64, No. 1 (2020). The authors proudly comprised of the extension project leaders and members.
